Gita
Amar Chitra Katha Comic Books Series
Gita short for Bhagavad Gita, 'the Divine Song', is a philosophical dialogue in verse from the Mahabharata. Its setting is the start of the great war between cousins, Kauravas and Pandavas.
Arjuna the Pandava hero asks his charioteer, the Divine Krishna, to position the chariot to gauge his adversaries. Faced with the thought of harming his close kin, elders and teachers is deeply disturbing for Arjuna. Distraught, he throws down his bow and declares he will not fight.
Krishna counsels him to perform his duty with full moral conviction. The dialogue between the two is contained in a compact poem of seven hundred verses in Sanskrit. It is the Gospel for the conduct of life for generations of Indians in all walks of life, including many nationalists and freedom fighters. Thousands know it by heart. In Indian law courts, people swear by the Gita when called upon to tell the truth.
