Bheeshma

In ancient times, when a king was considered as powerful as God, a young prince Devavrata, declined a kingdom. His refusal was reinforced by a vow of celibacy so no offspring of his could claim the throne. He was hailed as Bheeshma or the terrific one.

It is ironic that despite declining to be king, Bheeshma wielded power for longer than any other king of that dynasty. He was the regent for his stepbrothers and for his nephews. In fact, he ruled over the land till Duryodhana came of age. Yet all this was not of his seeking. He had to rule in spite of his renunciation. Bheeshma commanded the Kaurava army when the war started. As a soldier he was invincible
